The album was well-received by critics and fans alike, and it won multiple awards, including three Grammy Awards. Guts, Rodrigo’s second studio album, was released in 2023. The album was backed by the singles “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?” The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified Rodrigo five times platinum, given him two number one albums in the 200th Billboard album chart and three number one singles in the Billboard Hot 100 (RIAA). Olivia Isabel Rodrigo, the sole child of family therapist Chris Rodrigo and school teacher Jennifer, was born on February 20, 2003, at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, California. She was raised in Temecula, a nearby town. Rodrigo’s left ear was born partially deaf. Rodrigo is a Filipino American; her mother is German and Irish, while her father is Filipino. She has said that her family practices Filipino customs and food, and that her paternal great-grandfather left the Philippines when she was an adolescent. Her upbringing was influenced by the alternative rock groups that her parents loved, including Green Day, Pearl Jam, No Doubt, and the White Stripes.

In kindergarten, Rodrigo began taking acting and vocal classes. He also picked up the piano quickly after. Rodrigo participated in the after-school musical theater program at Lisa J. Mails Elementary School in Murrieta. By twelve, Rodrigo was proficient on the guitar. When Rodrigo started listening to country music, specifically singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, he developed an interest in songwriting.

Rodrigo made his movie debut as a young actress in an Old Navy advertisement. She made her acting debut shortly after, in 2015, when she was twelve years old, as Grace Thomas in the direct-to-video movie An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success. After securing an acting job in Disney Channel’s Bizaardvark in 2016, she moved to Los Angeles and attended Dorothy McElhinney Middle School in Murrieta for a year. From that point until her graduation in 2021, she was homeschooled. She portrayed the guitarist Paige Olvera in the lead role for three seasons.

She was given the lead role of Nini Salazar-Roberts in the February 2019 casting for the November 2019 premiere of the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Joel Keller from Decider called Rodrigo “especially magnetic” after seeing her perform, and she received appreciation for it. She quit the show after the conclusion of its third season in 2022 in order to concentrate on her music career.

Rodrigo declared herself Taylor Swift’s biggest admirer “in the whole world” in 2021 and cited Lorde and Swift as her primary musical inspirations and idols. Subsequently, Rodrigo gave Swift and Jack Antonoff interpolation credits on her song “1 step forward, 3 steps back” and retrospectively credited Annie Clark, Antonoff, and Swift on her song “Deja Vu”. She referred to Jack White of The White Stripes as her “hero of all heroes” in 2022. Alanis Morissette, Kacey Musgraves, Fiona Apple, St. Vincent, Cardi B, Gwen Stefani, Avril Lavigne, and Lana Del Rey were among the other musicians cited as having influenced Rodrigo’s debut album.

Rodrigo leaned more on her punk and alternative rock influences for her second album, including Rage Against the Machine and Babes in Toyland.

It is determined that Rodrigo has a soprano vocal type. According to media sources, Rodrigo is a pop musician who channels 1990s alternative rock while also producing music in the pop rock, teen pop, and indie pop genres. Since Interscope/Geffen Records CEO John Janick commended Rodrigo’s songwriting rather than her “potential star quality,” the singer-songwriter has made it clear that her goal is to become a songwriter rather than “the biggest pop star that ever lived.” Laura Snapes, a music journalist, referred to Rodrigo as a “flag-bearer” for a new generation of songwriters who lean toward power ballads “that are as emotional as ever, but project that emotion inward, trading bombast for hush.” She also described her sound as rooted in sadness, mental illness, and heartache without being overly dramatic and as communicating more realistic viewpoints than resilient.

Rodrigo has won numerous awards for her musical career, including two People’s Choice Awards, an American Music Award, a Brit Award, a Juno Award, three Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, and four iHeartRadio Music Awards.

Rodrigo was selected Time’s Entertainer of the Year for 2021 and included on Time magazine’s 100 Next list for 2021.
