Born on March 2, 1990, Luke Albert Combs is an American singer and songwriter of country music. He started performing when he was young and was born and reared in North Carolina. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in music after dropping out of college. In 2014, he released his debut EP, The Way She Rides.

His first album, This One’s for You, was released in 2017 and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. On November 8, 2019, he released his second album, What You See Is What You Get. The album became his first to reach the top of the charts in several different countries. On October 23, 2020, the album’s deluxe edition—which featured the song “Forever After All”—was released.

Three Grammy Award nominations, two iHeart Radio music awards, four Academy of Country Music Awards, and six Country Music Association Awards—including the Association’s highest honor, Entertainer of the Year—have all been bestowed upon him for his musical output.

In Huntersville, North Carolina, Combs was born as the sole child of Rhonda and Chester Combs. When he was eight years old, the family moved to Asheville, North Carolina. He participated in chorus class, several school productions, and the church choir as a child. The church choir gave a Carnegie Hall performance.

Prior to getting stage time at the same bar, he worked as a bouncer at Appalachian State University. In Boone, he performed at the Parthenon Cafe for his debut country music gig. He left his degree program after five years and twenty-one hours to focus on his country music career. Later, in order to pursue a career in music, he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee.

In February 2014, Combs released The Way She Rides, his debut EP. Can I Get an Outlaw, his second EP, was released later that year. His debut single from 2016 (titled “Hurricane”) peaked at number 46 on Hot Country Songs and sold 15,000 copies in its first week of release. This One’s for You, his third EP, was released in November 2015. He was listed as one of Sounds Like Nashville’s “Artists to Watch” towards the end of 2016.

He signed a deal with Sony Music Nashville, and the debut single from This One’s for You, “Hurricane”, was re-released on Columbia Nashville. On May 15, 2017, “Hurricane” peaked at number one on the country radio airplay chart and remained there for two weeks.

His major label debut album, This One’s for You, was released in June 2017 by Columbia Nashville and River House Artists. In its first week of release, it peaked at number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums and number five on the Billboard 200. On June 19, 2017, “When It Rains It Pours,” the second single off the album, was made available on country radio. In October 2017, it peaked at the top of the Country Airplay chart. On January 8, 2018, “One Number Away,” the third single off the album, was made available on country radio.

With five bonus tracks, including two singles that reached number one (“She Got the Best of Me” and “Beautiful Crazy”), he released a deluxe version of the album in June 2018 under the title This One’s for You Too. With his first five singles, “Beautiful Crazy” gave him five number-ones on the Billboard country chart. In February 2019, the song peaked at number one on Country Airplay. Three more country charts—Hot Country Songs, Country Streaming Songs, and Country Digital Song Sales—all had the song at the top.

On June 11, 2019, he received an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry.

This One’s for You broke the record for the longest run at the top of the Top Country Albums chart by a male artist in August 2019 after spending 44 weeks at the top. On November 8, 2019, his second album, What You See Is What You Get, was made available. The singles “Even Though I’m Leaving,” “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” “Does to Me” (a duet with Eric Church), and “Lovin’ on You” from the album have all peaked at number one on the country chart.

He released the single “Six Feet Apart” in May 2020. The song quickly gained popularity because it captured the difficulties of living during the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, he declared that “Lovin’ on You” would be the next single. This song was featured on both his second album and the EP The Prequel, which came out before the album.

What You See Ain’t Always What You Get, a deluxe version of What You See Is What You Get featuring five new songs, was announced by him and released on October 23, 2020. On Apple Music and Spotify, the song “Forever After All” broke all previous records for country music streaming. His third album, Growin’ Up, was made available on June 24, 2022. “Doin’ This,” “The Kind of Love We Make,” which peaked at number one on the country chart and number eight on the Hot 100, and “Going, Going, Gone” are among the singles from the album that have charted.

On March 24, 2023, his fourth album, Gettin’ Old, was made available. Before the album, a single called “Love You Anyway” and a promotional single called “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” were released. In less than two months after the album’s release, his rendition of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” was streamed over 65 million times on Spotify, making it the album’s most popular track there. The song has influenced him since he was a young child and he regards it as his first favorite song.
