Rapper and singer Aubrey Drake Graham, better known by his stage name Drake, was born in Canada on October 24, 1986. Drake, a significant figure in modern popular music, is recognized for having popularized hip hop’s use of singing and R&B sensibilities. He rose to fame as Jimmy Brooks on the CTV teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001–08). In February of that year, he released his debut mixtape, Room for Improvement, to launch his recording career. Before joining Young Money Entertainment, he released the mixtapes Comeback Season (2007) and So Far Gone (2009) as follow-ups.

Drake’s first three albums, Thank Me Later (2010), Take Care (2011), and Nothing Was the Same (2013), were met with critical and commercial success, catapulting him to the forefront of hip hop. All of his albums have topped the US Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart. Views (2016), his fourth album, explored dancehall and peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 for 13 weeks in a row, the first male artist to do so in more than a decade. The album featured the international hits “Hotline Bling” and “One Dance” (featuring WizKid and Kyla), which have been credited with bringing Afrobeats to a global audience. “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” and “In My Feelings” are the three US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles from Drake’s double album Scorpion, which was released in 2018. With its lead single “Way 2 Sexy” (featuring Future and Young Thug) reaching number one, Drake’s highly anticipated sixth album, Certified Lover Boy (2021), achieved nine top 10 hits on the Hot 100, briefly setting the record for most US top-ten hits from one album. Drake released the house-inspired album Honestly, Nevermind and the album she co-produced with 21 Savage, Her Loss, in 2022. With the number-one hits “Slime You Out” (featuring SZA) and “First Person Shooter” (featuring J. Cole) from his eighth album, For All the Dogs (2023), he tied Michael Jackson for the most number-one singles by a male solo artist. Drake, who is well-known for releasing mixtapes alongside his albums on a regular basis, found success both critically and commercially with the releases of If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (2015) and More Life (2017).

In 2012, Drake and his longtime partner 40 launched the OVO Sound record label as an entrepreneurial venture. Following his appointment to the Toronto Raptors executive committee and subsequent acquisition of the naming rights to their practice facility, Drake assumed the role of “global ambassador” in 2013. He started working with Brent Hocking on the Virginia Black bourbon whiskey in 2016. Drake founded the production company DreamCrew and the fragrance house Better World. He also serves as the head of the OVO fashion label and the Nocta partnership with Nike. According to reports, Drake brought in 5% (or CAD$440 million) of Toronto’s CAD$8.8 billion in tourism revenue in 2018. He acquired a portion of the Italian soccer team A.C. Milan in 2022.

Drake is one of the best-selling musicians in the world, having sold over 170 million records. The RIAA has certified him as the highest-ranking digital singles artist in the US. He is the recipient of a record 34 Billboard Music Awards, five Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Brit Awards, and three Juno Awards. In addition to holding multiple Hot 100 records, including the most top 10 singles (76) and the most charted songs (321), Drake has achieved 13 number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 (14 counting “Sicko Mode”). He held the records for the most concurrently charted songs in a week (27), the most Hot 100 debuts in a week (22), and the longest duration on the Hot 100 (431 weeks) between 2018 and 2023. In addition, he holds the record for most number-one hits on the charts for Rhythmic Airplay, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot Rap Songs, and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.

Drake has acknowledged a number of hip-hop musicians, such as Jay-Z, MF Doom, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West, as influences on his rapping style. He has also credited a number of R&B musicians, such as Usher and Aaliyah, with helping to incorporate the genre into his own music. Drake lists Vybz Kartel as one of his “biggest inspirations” and other dancehall artists as having influenced his Caribbean-infused style later on. He has been acknowledged for performing and drawing admirers from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, including Punjabi in an upcoming song with Sidhu Moose Wala and Wazir Patar, Arabic in the song Greece, Portuguese in Ela É do Tipo, French in Sticky, and Spanish in Mia.

Pop rap is how people classify Drake. After releasing the albums Nothing Was the Same (2013) and Views (2016), Drake’s sound has expanded to include pop and trap in addition to his earlier genres of hip hop and R&B. Regional scenes such as UK drill and Jamaican dancehall have also influenced his music. Drake is renowned for his technical prowess, conceited lyrics, and incorporation of personal history into his discussions of relationships with women. His ability to blend melody and typical hip-hop beats—occasionally harsh rapping mixed with softer accents, delivered on technical lyricism—has earned him praise for his vocal abilities.

His songs frequently feature audible lyrical pronunciation shifts that correspond with his Toronto upbringing and his connections to the Caribbean and Middle East, incorporating words like “ting,” “touching road,” “talkin’ boasy,” and “gwanin’ wassy.” Rapping and singing are combined in most of his songs, which also feature elements of Canadian hip hop and R&B. He attributes the inclusion of singing in his rap mixtapes, which have become a mainstay in his musical repertoire, to his father. Lil Wayne encouraged him to incorporate melody into his technically difficult lyrics, and as a result, Drake’s singles and albums have been praised for their use of melody. The rap-sung contrast and vacuous beats that define Drake’s R&B style have also made it extremely popular and inspired a number of copycats.

Most people think Drake’s lyrical content is boastful or overly sentimental. Drake, however, is frequently praised for bringing “degrading” themes of money, drugs, and women into more contemporary, idealized settings. He frequently accomplishes this by augmenting the conventional meaning of phrases by fusing an objective and subjective point of view into a single vocal delivery. The tension in his songs frequently comes from the interplay of “pause and pace, tone timbre, volume and vocal fermata.” Drake is recognized for having invented “hyper-reality rap,” which is distinguished by its emphasis on themes of celebrity as separate from the “real world.”
